The latest and possibly greatest entry into the iconic DOOM franchise to date, id Software’s DOOM The Dark Ages, releases on 15 May 2025 for PC and current-gen consoles. It is said to be the most ambitious DOOM game to date, but will it have multiplayer?
Instead of beating around the bush and typing another four paragraphs before getting to the point (like most places do!), No Luck Gaming can confirm that DOOM The Dark Ages will not feature multiplayer at launch.
Why DOOM The Dark Ages Won’t Have Multiplayer
With DOOM The Dark Ages, developer id Software is focusing on the story, campaign, and combat, where players will explore the Slayer’s past through medieval battlefields, dark forests, dungeons, and much more.
According to a confirmed report by Euro Gamer based on a Q&A session, the game’s executive producer, Marty Stratton, has confirmed that DOOM The Dark Ages is “strictly campaign,” smashing hopes of any multiplayer at launch.
Mr. Stratton then expanded a bit according to the report, explaining that:
We made that decision early so we could really just go all in on the campaign. It’s our largest, most expansive, most epic campaign ever, and we’re just really happy with the decision. It’s been awesome to have the team focused just on polishing and finishing the campaign.
Hugo Martin, the DOOM The Dark Ages game director, further elaborated:
That’s why we were able to put the dragon and the Atlan [mech] in. I mean, these are things we wanted to do in the game for, like, multiple games now, but couldn’t because we had a multiplayer component – which we loved – but really, it was meant to just focus on the single-player campaign and just level up that experience for players.
I’m slightly disappointed that DOOM The Dark Ages won’t have any form of multiplayer, but I get it! Honestly, focusing on the campaign, which DOOM games have always been about anyway, makes perfect sense.
As a prequel to DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal, I can’t wait to play the latest game in the franchise on my Xbox Series X since there’s no way my work PC meets the minimum system requirements.
