According to the Fortnite Anti-Cheat Update published on February 27, 2025, a new policy change will unban all players who received lifetime cheating bans lasting over one year. This decision marks a significant departure from Epic Games’ historically strict stance on cheating, which famously included permanent bans for offenders.
The update is expected to roll out by April and offers a “second and final chance” to players previously banned from the game. “We’ll be moving to a one-year matchmaking ban for first-time cheating offenses, allowing former cheaters to learn from their mistakes while still punishing and deterring cheating. A second offense will result in a lifetime ban,” the blog said.
“This means for the duration of their first ban, players will be able to log in and text/voice chat with other players.” The catch? These players won’t be able to play in any Epic- or creator-made experiences—let alone spectate other players. “As part of rolling out this policy, existing lifetime cheating bans that have been in effect for more than a year will be lifted,” the blog added.
The move has already sparked quite a lot of chatter across gaming circles. Most notably, posts on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) suggest that high-profile players like Jarvis Kaye, a former Fortnite streamer banned in 2019 for using cheats, could return to the Battle Bus. Jarvis is recognized for his entertaining content and affiliation with FaZe Clan, so it’s only natural his return might be met with hype.
That being said, other banned pros (like Kez, Kquid, and RepulseGod) and casual players alike could similarly revitalize the game’s ecosystem, bringing fresh energy to a title nearing its eighth anniversary. From an ethical standpoint, the decision could also be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it promotes forgiveness and second chances, potentially rehabilitating players who’ve matured since their infractions.
On the other, it also risks alienating loyal fans who value fair play, as some worry that reintegrating cheaters could undermine competitive integrity. For Fortnite, this gamble could either reinvigorate its player base or stir controversy if old habits resurface. So, the question begs: will this policy breathe new life into Fortnite—or test the limits of its community’s trust? Only time (and the next drop from the Battle Bus) will tell.
