The God of War franchise is two decades old. Yes, the original outing of Kratos on PlayStation, aptly called just “God of War,” that kicked off the franchise, was released on 22 March 2005. Feeling old yet?
To celebrate God of War’s 20th anniversary, Santa Monica Studio and Sony are throwing some free stuff at gamers. This includes a free update for anyone on PlayStation 5 or PC who owns God of War Ragnarök, a fan kit, and even some cosmetic items on Steam and the PlayStation Store.
In a PlayStation Blog post, the developers announced the free God of War goodies news, stating:
Back in 2005 when the first God of War released, no one at Santa Monica Studio anticipated the success this series would have. Every creative endeavor carries the hopes of those who shaped it that they might be able to carve a legacy in the industry. What makes those hopes a reality has always been the support of players who chose to pick up the game and go on a journey with us.
Now let’s take a quick look at the God of War anniversary freebies, as well as important release dates.
Free God of War Fan Kit & Themes
The first freebies to get released is the God of War anniversary fan kit. It has been available since 14 March, with no end date to the promotion.
You can download the fan kit here, which includes social media assets, and desktop/mobile wallpapers.
On 20 March 2025, some God of War anniversary goodies will also be released via the Steam Points Shop for PC gamers, and you’ll get an anniversary-themed PlayStation Network Avatar on PS5.
God of War Ragnarök Dark Odyssey Collection
Starting on Thursday, 20 March 2025, anyone who owns God of War Ragnarök on PC or PlayStation, will see an update applied automatically. This update ushers in the free Dark Odyssey Collection, with several cosmetic items.
The Dark Odyssey Collection features an iconic skin for Kratos that was earned in God of War II back in the day for beating the game on God Mode. Check out the details of the collection below.

Please note: The weapon appearances are made for the fully upgraded version of each weapon and will only be available for use upon reaching that upgrade.
An Art Exhibit
For those with the ability to travel to the Gallery Nucleus in Los Angeles, California, there’s an exhibit taking place from 15 to 23 March 2025. This exhibit features a collection of new artwork inspired by 20 years of God of War, which includes concept art from games, unique memorabilia, and more from former and current Santa Monica Studio devs.
Lastly, fans can purchase real-life merch starting on 17 March 2025, celebrating the God of War anniversary.
