Not all heroes wear capes—sometimes, they just play Super Mario 64 really well. That’s where Bubzia comes in, a speedrunner who’s smashed the world record for a 70 Star clear while blindfolded.
Yes, you read that news tidbit correctly. While I don’t pretend to know precisely how all these Super Mario 64 speedruns work, I do know there’s a huge community. Players have been setting and breaking records since the game’s release in 1996!
For most of us, it might seem impossible to beat the game with 70 Stars while blindfolded. Not only did Bubzia achieve this feat (he had the previous world record as well) but he set a new record in the process.
The new world record for the Super Mario 64 blindfolded 70 Star run is 1:16:41, as Bubzia beat his previous record with over three minutes.
The speedrunner’s YouTube channel and video description explains the amount of precision required to pull off such a feat, stating:
This world record was set on day 91 of the grind (in terms of streams), and was around 5 months in the making. 70 Star is one, if not the hardest blindfolded category in SM64, as it is both optimized for speed like 16 Star, but also incredibly long, closer to 120 Star. So it combines the worst of both worlds: incredible precision and really hard strats together with hour-long focus that cannot break even for a single second.
