As of Apr. 21, 2025, there are exactly 19 classes in Dead Rails (including the “None” starter class). I’ve ranked each of them from best to worst, so you can spend your Bonds where they matter most. That said, I know that not everybody will agree with my class tier list—and that’s okay!
This is mainly because how good a class is depends heavily on your playstyle. The Vampire class has strong healing buffs, which is great for combat (or hunting down Jade Tablets). On the other hand, Musician is just as good, but only if you’re playing in a party or Nightmare mode when there’s no passive healing.
Here’s my class tier list in Dead Rails:

The best class in Dead Rails is the Vampire class, primarily because it offers survivability and consistent, game-long speed (that’s faster than Horse). Speed is one of the most important stats in the game, allowing you to outrun enemies and avoid danger, which is exactly what the class delivers!
Unlike the Werewolf class, which only gains 2x Movement Speed, Damage, and Health buffs at night, the Vampire class is powerful literally all of the time. Its major drawback—losing Health during the day—is easily countered by the Vampire Knife, which heals you with every hit.
This balance of speed, offense, and self-healing makes the Vampire class in Dead Rails incredibly reliable and dominant across all game modes, securing its top-tier status. It’s a little pricy at 75 Bonds but totally worth it! It includes the Shovel and Vampire Knife as starting items.
